What you can get on an airplane

It is forbidden for passengers to bring on board an aircraft of prohibited items in carry-on baggage, in their checked baggage or on their own. However, you can take numerous articles on board an aircraft. If you are unsure whether a particular item is allowed, you should check out the complete list of permitted and non-permitted on the website of the Canadian Security Authority Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA). For prohibited items, TC offers a list of prohibited items on board aircraft.

A general permit or prohibited items list to board a plane:


matches 

Matches shall be reserved for personal use and be on the user (in a pocket or purse, for example). A safety match book per person is allowed.

Portable Electronics 

In the cabin of the plane, you can take portable electronic devices such as a camera, game console, cell phone, laptop or camcorder. However, it is best to check with the airline before boarding or a crew member once on board if you can use these devices during flight.

Some electronic devices are strictly prohibited at all times, as they can cause interference with navigation systems and communication of the aircraft. For others, it allowed the crew takes you to use it during part of the flight at cruise speed.

All electronic devices must be stowed during takeoff and landing, and when the aircraft passes through an area of turbulence.

Because listening and headsets may prevent a passenger hear the instructions of crew members, it is forbidden to be used in the tarmac of the airport during takeoff or landing in areas of turbulence and of course in an emergency.

Remember that you must keep in your carry lithium batteries in your cell phone, your laptop or your tablet, and your spare lithium batteries.

CPAP machine CPAP 

This equipment is allowed to board a plane. The distilled water used in this device is exempt from the restrictions on liquids. We recommend that passengers carry supporting documentation in the form of a doctor's note clearly stating the medical condition that requires them to use distilled water.

Service Animals 

The presence of service animals are permitted on board aircraft with 30 seats or more. Service animals may remain in the cabin, provided they have been prepared by a professional organization of service animal to assist a person. The animal must be properly harnessed and remain under the supervision of his master, and did not need to wear a muzzle. If the size of the animal is too large or if there is not enough space under the seat to get it, he must remain lying at the feet of his master.

People accompanied by a service animal may not occupy a seat where the presence of the animal obstruct or impede access to an emergency exit or prevent a crew member to perform the tasks assigned to it in case emergency.

Firearms and other devices that can cause serious injury by firing a projectile 

Firearms and other devices that can cause serious injury by pulling one (eg.. Arrow) projectile or items that can pass for such devices (p. Ex. Toy guns) are prohibited.

Personal care items

The presence of toiletries in carry-on baggage is permitted if these items meet the restrictions on liquids, aerosols and gels. For details, see the Complete List of Articles of CATSA.

alcoholic beverages 

Please see our page on what you can bring back to Canada for the amount of alcohol you can bring back to Canada aboard the plane. Regarding alcoholic drink you can bring when traveling in Canada, they must meet the requirements for liquids, aerosols and gels, unless they were purchased in a bag security tamper indicator.

Bottles of oxygen gas 

Passengers must first obtain authorization from the carrier before bringing on board small bottles of oxygen gas needed for medical purposes.

lighters 

You can carry with you a disposable lighter (p. Ex. Bic-type, non-refillable) for personal use. A lighter per person is permitted.

Devices designed specifically to stun or paralyze 

Devices designed specifically to stun or paralyze (p. Ex. Electric [taser] stunner baton or tear gas) are prohibited.

Wheelchairs or other mobility aids to motorized 

With the approval of the airline, passengers can bring their wheelchairs or other mobility aids motor if the conditions of storage of these devices are met.

dry ice 

Passengers may carry dry ice in quantities not exceeding 2.5 kg per person, to pack perishables that are not hazardous materials, provided that the package lets out carbon dioxide. Specific instructions regarding the package carefully.

Liquids, aerosols and gels 

Liquids, aerosols or gels are permitted if they are in containers of 100 ml or 100 g which can be placed in a single bag closed and resealable transparent plastic with a capacity not exceeding 1 liter.

Breast milk and infant formula are allowed, even if the passenger does not travel with the baby, but they may be subject to additional screening.

Sharp objects or sharp edges 

Sharp objects or sharp edges (p. Ex. Ax, chopper boxes, sword) that can be used to cause serious injury is prohibited.

Tools that can be used either to cause serious injury or to threaten the safety of the aircraft 

Tools that can be used either to cause serious injury or to threaten the safety of the aircraft (eg. Bar p. Nails, saw or nail gun, that is to say, an automatic tool to nail or screw ) are prohibited.

Sharps (p. Ex. American knuckle-fist, golf club, hockey stick) that can be used to strike and cause serious injury is prohibited.

Substances or explosive or incendiary devices 

Substances or explosive or incendiary devices (p. Ex. Detonator, fireworks or ammunition) can be used to cause serious injury or threaten the safety of the aircraft are prohibited.

Medical or clinical thermometer thermometer 

Passengers can bring to a small personal or small clinical thermometer clinical thermometer containing mercury, if it is in a protective case.
